Sydney Theatre Company to house largest solar array in Australia

SYDNEY Theatre Company (STC) is set to become the home of the largest capacity solar array mounted on a building in Australia.

The project represents a unique partnership between STC and the University of NSW’s School of Photovoltaics and Renewable Energy Engineering.

The installation of the 2000 solar panels, working in harmony with a major heritage-listed building, will provide a high profile showcase for UNSW’s world-leading photovoltaics research and development.

The project will install Pluto photovoltaic cells — high-efficiency, low-cost solar cells developed by UNSW and China’s Suntech Power from the University’s world-record-holding PERL silicon solar cell technology.

STC’s project comprises three key initiatives. The first is the installation of a large capacity PV array, the second being the introduction of extensive energy efficiency measures; and the last being the introduction of an innovative rainwater harvesting, storage and reticulation system which will supply 100 per cent of the Company’s nonpotable water requirements.

The solar array will be erected on the roof of The Wharf of the Sydney Harbour-based company, along with energy saving measures, and will reduce STC’s power drawn from the grid by up to 70 per cent.
