THE 121-year-old Sydney Town Hall is being kept up to date with the latest technology following the installation of 240 solar panels on its roof.
According to the City of Sydney, it is the largest photovoltaic installation in the Sydney central business district, which will help reduce the City’s environmental footprint and produce 48 kilowatts at their peak.
“The state-of-the-art solar panels incorporate the latest technology from the University of NSW and are the first of their kind to be installed in Australia,” Lore Mayor Clover Moore says.
The solar panels will supply power to Sydney Town Hall, including the Town Hall Council Chambers and Councillor offices.
“These panels are a higher efficiency technology manufactured at lower cost,” she says.
To avoid damage to the heritage state roof of Town hall, cranes and special fixtures were used to hoist the materials into place.
Moore says the City of Sydney will be investing $18 million to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions through solar hot water, solar panels, sensor lighting and intelligent control systems that manage energy use as it is needed.
“Our plan is to provide 25% of our energy needs from renewable sources and reduce growing demand for power from coal-fired power stations,” she says.
“Our target is a minimum of 48 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from our properties by 2012."
